About - Machete and Fork
Based in Canberra we're a family of six who like adventures and exploring. Casual dining either on our own or with the kids, day trips around the Canberra region, long weekends further afield, this blog aims to give people an insight into the places you can visit and what to expect when you get there.
Price point rating
For dining our price scale is:
$ - cheap and cheerful. Less than $20 per person to eat a full meal
$$ - mid-range and manageable. $20-50 per person for a full meal
$$$ - exclusive and expensive. $50 or more for a full meal
For shops our pricing scale is:
$ - bargain basement. Lots of things for under $20
$$ - stable staples. A mid-range spending experience. Not a bargain, but not an indulgence either.
$$$ - luxe living. Investments and indulgences. We're talking higher end boutique experiences.
Value for money
Kid factor
Sometimes it's hard to know how family friendly a place will be. Sometimes it's about the framing. Sometimes it's about the overall vibe of the place you're at. We have four children aged from fairly young through to teenager, and with our kid factor we will try and give you our take on whether a place is a good experience for children and, if so, for what ages it might be suitable. If the kids are present and want to share their thoughts, you will find their take summed up here.
Positive and negatives
This is the overall summing up of an experience. Sometimes a place can look good on paper and feel wrong when you get there. Sometimes you have an overwhelmingly good experience but there's a sting in the tail that wasn't on the menu ($13 for a 750ml bottle of sparkling water at Grazing is an excellent example of what I'm talking about here). We will also try to give a feel for whether a place is suitable for autistic people - a nod to the sensory experience that isn't often a consideration in reviews.
Machete and Fork is a record of our experiences and a guide for adventurous couples and families looking for inspiration.
